Big Big Big Bend
It is Texas after all. Land of the BIG!
As I mentioned in the previous post, we opted to leave San Antonio a couple days early to be sure we were settled into the next campground before the big storm (Fern) came crashing down.
I’m not afraid of cold, snow, ice. But I am afraid of Texans on the road in cold, snow, ice! Just sayin’.
Once again, probably too big for email. Just click the title.
Roadrunner Travelers RV
We opted to not camp in Big Bend National Park and instead found an RV park just to the west of it in the tiny town of Terlingua, TX. Roadrunner Travelers RV park is a newer park that is still being expanded.
Ironically, the spot we chose had 50amp power and sewer, but no water. They hadn’t finished hooking up the water lines. 🤦♂️
But it turned out OK. We have a big water tank in this rig. Thank you, Brinkley!
The storm rolled in the next couple of days. It was gross: grey, rainy, cold.
But no snow! We were enough south to avoid that. ✅
We had lovely fondue, a lovely sunset, and a lovely Broncos game.
Closed Canyon
One of the fun hikes we did was one of the few dog-friendly hikes in the area: Closed Canyon Trail. It was really quite cool!
Big Bend National Park
We also did a drive around/through Big Bend via the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. We would have spent more time, but they don’t allow pets! Even on leash, they don’t want you to bring your dog. I tried to understand it, but Tom, a fellow RV-er, offered this brilliant insight: “There are mountain lions in the area. Having your dog on leash is just you saying to the mountain lions: ‘Here’s a treat on a leash for you!’”. Yikes! 🫣
Yeah, so let’s just do a drive through it… including the 20+ miles of seriously back-country (and washboard-y) road.
More Site Seeing
Along the way for this 9 days we saw some other fun things, such as beautiful vistas of the Rio Grande…
A cool Tee-Pee themed rest stop…
This weird futuristic resort with 3-sided “rooms” with these air-bubble thingies?
And the Terlingua Ghost Town…
Also, an honest-to-goodness Texas Longhorn. Crazy big horns!
It was a nice place to be while the rest of most of the US was socked in by Storm Fern. Whew! And the lack of water was fine. I was able to hook up a bunch of hoses and just make it to one of the working spigots across the way so I could fill up the tank near the end. We did fine. 🚰
The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. Psalm 65:8

Hi Dan and Melissa, sounds like you guys are having lots of fun on your current adventure. It was good seeing you again in San Antonio and dinner at Pappadeaux's. Take care and maybe our paths will cross again one day. God bless. Jim & Denise
